TRAVELLING COIN DESIGNS

Travelling is my passion.  But what to do with all those leftover coins?  I make them into one-of a-kind, stunning, interesting custom jewelry - necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

Home: Welcome

When I was a child, I loved watching my mom getting ready to go out... helping her choose what necklace she'd wear, helping her put it on...  Mom kept her jewelry in  those little boxes from the department store.  The necklaces would get all knotted and tangled.  I could spend hours removing the knots and polishing them shiny, placing them back in that little box again only to retangle.  She used to tell me I had great patience.

When I grew up, I began to travel abroad.  Fantastic places, wonderful places!  As a souvenir, coins would come home and end up in a scrap book or in a bag for occasional viewing at some later time.  Then I asked my husband to take some of my favorite coins and have a necklace or bracelet made.  When I opened that gift, the fever, or ferver, began and Travelling Coin Designs was born!

THE PROCESS

How It Happens

First, the idea.  What is it I want to create today?  Ahhh, a bracelet!  What kind of bracelet?  Let's make a charm bracelet.

The drill must be prepared with the proper sized bit and the holes must be drilled very carefully.  After that, the flipside hole must be deburred to ensure smoothness on both sides.

Assembly comes next:  fine and detailed handwork.

What kind of chain?  Just the right set of beads, baubles or chain must be chosen.

Then, selection of coins.  Should they be same color?  Country?  No...  Different shapes of coins for today's bracelet.  They are not all the same size or shape.  Some are very old, some shiny.  The coins have to be cleaned, and next, the layout.  How will the coins sit on the chain?  What kind of rings should hold the coins to the chain?

Where should the holes be drilled in the coins?  It is important to me that the coins sit a certain way on each particular piece.  The holes on each coin are then marked.

Once the piece is constructed, it gets polished on all sides.  However, today's bracelet is supposed to look primal, global, international so those old coins only get polished on their edges - to keep the patina and scratches, yet add some shine.

All the joints have to be sured up with a soldering iron and, finally... final inspection.

This bracelet is beautiful!
